5th Place.

Once again it looked as if we had avoided the rain and although there were some dodgy black clouds in the vicinity, the weather forecaster had been confident of a dry day.

bullet

We managed to arrive almost first at the circuit after a shorter than expected drive up from Cambridge and got a good spot in the pits.

bullet

Thomas was nursing a potential hangover after a celebratory dinner the night before, but took on the task of doing the testing in the two hour period available.

bullet

We concentrated mainly on tyre pressures and very soon Thomas had got down to a stunning 38.08 sec lap - substantially faster than we had gone before.

bullet

Unfortunately everything we did after that, including returning to the same settings achieved slower times, but we ended up with a pretty reasonable set up.

bullet

After 90 minutes James took over and spent the next half hour driving like an undertaker at a funeral. A change to new tyres made little difference and Thomas got back in to qualify us in 12th position in 38.619.

bullet

Zero Racing were alongside us on the grid - as usual - with James starting for us and wondering how he was going to stop himself falling to the bottom of the grid as soon as the race started.

bullet

However, despite his foreboding he was 11th at the start and then spent a few laps pogoing around the grid - 14th on lap 1, 12th on lap 2 and 10th on lap 7.

bullet

Everyone in front disappeared into the distance but he had first Dogz and then Zero burning a hole in his back bumper for much of this time until gradually he got the hang of the circuit and began to pull away.

bullet

On lap 32 he got our fastest lap of the race at 38.401 - still quite a way off Tom's best of the morning.

bullet

By lap 66 we were in 9th as ZLR dropped down the order and then, as the pit stops started, we progressed up to 4th for a few laps before pitting ourselves on lap 95 after just over an hour.

bullet

We had a good clean re-fuel and Tom was out again in 7th with Special Racing Projects and Xtreme in front.

bullet

Things were pretty settled now for the next fifty odd laps until Thomas moved ahead of both Voodoo and Xtreme into 5th place with Auto 1 behind in 6th.

bullet

A few laps later he was past Special Racing Projects as well as they ran out of fuel - luckily only a hundred yards short of the pit lane.

bullet

As K1 pitted for fuel we were briefly into 3rd spot for a couple of laps before we also came in for our last fuel stop.

bullet

We knew we had to do one more pit stop but we took on enough fuel now to last us to the end of the race so that the third stop would just be a drive through.

bullet

The pit stop was pretty good but we still dropped three places to put us behind K1, Voodoo and Xtreme again.

bullet

Voodoo dropped down a few laps later which gave us 5th and on the track James found himself slowly winding in Zero Racing.

bullet

He was just getting to within striking distance when Dogz entered the equation. Zero got past them OK but James wasn't close enough to do a follow through and on the wide left hander on the infield he just clipped the back of the Dogz kart while taking a tighter line. Dogz spun taking James with them and although he kept going we lost about seven seconds on that lap.

bullet

Zero had almost disappeared into the distance by the time he got back to racing speed.

bullet

Not many laps later SRP came past dropping us down to 6th again but almost immediately pitted to restore us to 5th and then 4th as Xtreme did the same.

bullet

Lap 240 and James had just about caught Zero again after the debacle with Dogz. At this point Thomas took a tactical decision to bring him in for the final pit stop - at best James was going to be slowed by Zero and at worst he would self destruct in trying to get past. It was a good move and we were through in 50 seconds declining to 5th place as Xtreme powered past.

bullet

They weren't far ahead and in the last eight laps James made up almost 4 seconds as he became more focused on going faster. But it wasn't enough at that late stage and Xtreme finished just six seconds ahead after 3hrs of racing.
