Bayford Meadows; Round 4 Southern Promax Championship July 11th 2004

Finishing position: 11th

bullet

It looked like a blazing hot day was developing as we arrived at the 08.00hrs but the forecast was definite about there being showers later. However we didn't really expect to have change to the wets; even if it did rain the retained heat in the track and the fairly decent wind would dry off the tarmac pretty quickly as long as the showers were short.

bullet

Set up had been pretty much done by Thomas beforehand, so all we had to do now was to swap the tyres around and to put some new rose joints on the steering.

bullet

We also discovered that the tyre pressure gauge had been over reading by about 5psi - not a problem in itself except when one started to talk to other people about tyre pressures. So we swapped to the one that gave us the nearest accurate answer.

bullet

Thomas went out first and said the kart felt fine........

bullet

James went out and although the kart felt fine, he obviously didn't....

bullet

We lowered the tyre pressures and then widened the wheel base......

bullet

Neither made it any better so we went back to the original settings stuck on some new tyres and sent Tom out to qualify - which he did for 14th position again, in 51.745.

bullet

As he came back into the pits we could hear the starter motor still turning. A faulty starter button was diagnosed, a new one purchased and fitted just as the grid began to form up.

bullet

Thomas started well holding a strong 14th position and looking competitive, but after about 20 laps the performance went off a bit and Auto 1 followed by Zero came through.

bullet

On lap 20 he got our fastest lap of the race at 51.638 and on lap 50 was on his way back up the grid to 14th, then 13th and then right up to 8th as other teams began to pit for fuel.

bullet

James had meant to leave him out there for a good hour, but having done that it was becoming difficult to find a space to bring Thomas in. Eventually after 5 minutes extra James brought him in for the refuel, only getting balked for a few seconds at the fuel bay by the preceding team.

bullet

James was out now, hoping to finish the hour more than anything else.

bullet

He found a rhythm which was pretty consistent but pretty slow being about seven tenths off Thomas times. Having dropped momentarily to 15th he regained 14th and stuck there gaining 13th eventually before the pit stops promoted him to 12th .

bullet

The kart felt OK but definitely wasn't feeling as good as it had done at the previous race. Having said that, most teams were finding the track significantly slower than before.

bullet

Thomas brought him in just short of the hour and there was a good driver change over, cutting 23 seconds off our previous time.

bullet

As a result we lost only one place and were in 13th as the forecast rain began. This made driving extremely difficult but Thomas held it all together and held position. Meanwhile the pit crew were determined not to change to wets and gradually the rain spat itself out and the track speeded up again. By the end Thomas was in the low 52s again and we were up to 10th.

bullet

Once again James kept him out for as long as possible and brought him into a clear pit after 66mins. A short confusion and delay at the weighbridge delayed him a little and then James was out in 132s.

bullet

Back in 12th again and then 11th as he overtook Extreme Racing and then he came up against Voodoo who he managed to overtake. But they weren't going to give up easily and came back again past James. Positions then swapped regularly over the next 15 laps until James had a look up the inside after the pits bend, decided that it would be unsporting to push through and started to move over to the outside behind Voodoo. At the same moment Voodoo made a slight hesitation and James just clipped the back bumper sending both karts off onto the grass.

bullet

Red Stripe received a warning flag for this, but after a few laps it all became academic as the rain came down again. Voodoo went past and well away, with James really struggling with the kart in the wet.

bullet

It stayed pretty damp for the rest of the race, drying just a little for the last two or three laps as we finally came through in 11th place.

bullet

So that was that, and we have a break now until September as we can't compete at the next round because of holiday commitments. Championship positions are here and I recommend you read Alan Wood's report of the race for a less biased view!
